Getting Doctors Paid

Priced June 07, 2024

American hospitals lose real money every year to insurance claims that are filed wrong, denied, or never paid. Waystar sells the software that fights that loss. It checks a patient's coverage, cleans up claims before they go out, and chases payments when they stall. The company was built by private equity from two older firms, Navicure and ZirMed. In June 2024, after years of buyouts and mergers, it went public on Nasdaq.

Navicure Meets ZirMed

Navicure was co-founded in January 2001 to handle medical billing over the internet. ZirMed, a Louisville company, did similar work for hospitals. Private equity owners brought the two together in 2017 under the Waystar name. The bet was that health care payments were so messy that one large platform could take a small cut of billions of transactions. Waystar runs from offices in Lehi, Utah, and Louisville, Kentucky.

A $967 Million Offering

Waystar priced its IPO at $21.50 a share on June 6, 2024, and sold 45 million shares, raising about $967 million. It began trading on Nasdaq as WAY the next day. Its owners, EQT, CPP Investments and Bain Capital, kept large stakes. In 2025 Waystar bought Iodine Software, which uses AI to review clinical documentation. Waystar still trades on Nasdaq.
